The Origin of the Camel Figurines

These photos were taken in the desert outside of the Drâa Valley in Morocco. Resting in the sand were hand made camel figurines, crafted by this woman who sold them outside of her shelter seen just behind her. Made from wire, camel hair, and found material, these are some of the most beautiful and memorable items I had seen during my trip. A few are currently for sale in the Home Goods section of the shop, and will never ever again be restocked. This isn’t the kind of thing you just buy and buy again. These are talismans of a people’s reality, history and heritage. The last one pictured here is one of my favorites, fashioned with the free people symbol of the Amazigh.

50% of sales will be donated to the @highatlasfoundation ensuring ongoing support for the people of the Atlas Mountains. They’ve just celebrated their 20th year, and I’m happy to celebrate with them.
