Meeting Ourselves Where We Are

Recently, a client arrived for a massage session visibly exhausted and overwhelmed. As I always do, I asked a few gentle, introductory questions to understand how they were feeling - physically, emotionally, and energetically - so I could meet them where they were. They shared that they were tired, emotional, and navigating some major life changes. I let them know that all of this was not only allowed but understandable, and I asked if there was anything in particular they wanted to focus on during the session.

They shook their head. “I just need help calming my nervous system,” they said.

Then came a quiet, tentative apology:
“Sorry. I might cry on the table. I hope that’s okay.”

“Of course that is okay,” I replied. “That’s more than okay.”

As we began, I noticed a small, humble tattoo on their arm. In strong brick letters it read: Carpe Diem. Seize the day. I wondered if they knew how deeply they were living into that very notion. Simply showing up for themselves in a world that feels chaotic and unpredictable is an act of courage and care.

In times of stress or uncertainty, taking a moment to connect with our own nervous systems - to breathe, release tension, and allow ourselves to be seen - is powerful. It’s not just about surviving; it’s about preparing to thrive. When we honor our own needs, we create space to respond to the world from a place of groundedness, rather than depletion. We become more able to show up for others when they need us, and to meet life’s unexpected demands with greater clarity and presence.

Whether you’re carving out moments of rest, seeking support, or simply allowing yourself to feel, I want to salute you. Whatever your version of carpe-ing your diems looks like, it matters. It is enough. Keep going, keep showing up for yourself, and honor the small, brave acts of care that often go unseen.

Because sometimes, seizing the day isn’t about doing more. It’s about simply allowing yourself to be, wherever you may be in the given moment.

Journal Prompt:
Take a moment to check in with yourself right now. What part of your nervous system or inner life needs acknowledgment, rest, or gentle care today? How might you give yourself permission to meet that need, even in a small way?
